I have always believed in focusing on what's “right” about someone with autism or neurodiversity rather than focusing on what's “wrong” with them.
Since I first began my journey in this field, so many community members have told me the puzzle piece makes them feel bad, like a part of them is broken.
That's why we began with the STAR as our brand in 1998 BECAUSE:
1. We want everyone to feel good about themselves and to know they are NOT BROKEN.
2. It's important to focus on the gifts, strengths, and talents that every single human on earth has and they also have.
3. Autism and neurodiversity can be invisible to many people so its important for others to recognize signs of people who are also neurodiverse.
4. To become a recognizable symbol to others.
5. You get a STAR when you do something great in school, isn't right?
We created the SPECTRUM STAR™ which represents ALL people on the neurodiversity spectrum in a positive way and thought long and hard about it to come up with our new unique design.
WHAT IS OUR INSPIRATION?
The SPECTRUM STAR™ is inspired by the RGB light spectrum. When the three lights combine, we find a bright white in the intersection of colors. This concept plays with the idea of moments when all the pieces come together, and you find the “spark”. It is the moment of clarity when all perspectives align and there is hope.
From the “spark” we find our SPECTRUM STAR™ and 3 colors that reflect what NEURODISTINCT PEOPLE ARE ALL ABOUT!
Creative green abounds in each and every one in how they express their expansive joy, art, music, writing, engineering, and whatever it may be
Vibrant red is for the insatiable urge they have to eagerly express their life and energy and do whatever they dare dream.
Curious blue expands and unfolds the minds of genius often forever untold.
Lets empower the people here, especially the neurodiverse and embrace their SPECTRUM STARS™ by helping them focus on their own gifts, strengths and talents whatever they may be!
When we focus our attention on the positives in our children we bring out their gifts, strengths and talents to life!…their inner sparkle.
As a gemologist, when I used to pass star sapphires out at autism conferences to the audience of parents I would ask them to shine their phone light on the gemstones. Of course, without the light, there would be no star! This is the same as our children, if we don’t shine our light of hope on them, they will not flourish!
In conclusion, what we are doing is gathering our autistic and neurodiverse stars wherever they show up. Whether in art, music, technology or even driving to deliver medication to the elderly. We need to focus on THEIR strengths!
